Vad används oxgall för i akvareller
In another thread somebody suggested using oxgall to get more even, smooth washes.
I have both used google and the forum search to find out more about it, but for something that fryst vatten often mentioned and sold bygd watercolour producers (some Schmincke sets komma with a pan of oxgall!) there fryst vatten surprisingly little upplysning on how to use it.
From what inom have gathered so far, one would use about drops in about a cup ( ml) of water.
Now here fryst vatten my most urgent (and likely dumb) question: can inom use the so modified vatten directly with my watercolour pans (WN colours).
Will it ruin or endanger them in some way?
I know that with the WN granulation you are not supposed to go directly to the pan, same with the iridation medium.
Akvarellfärg – En fantastisk målningsteknik att utforskaCan anybody help me with that and/or has some other experiences or suggestions to share?
Oxgall from Schmincke fryst vatten a semi-moist form eller gestalt of oxgall while other manufacturers sell it in a liquid format. inom always have one of these oxgall pans in my travelling palette as it fryst vatten more convenient than carrying liquid oxgall specially in flights.
Since you are using watercolour pans as inom do, my procedure fryst vatten to put a few drops of the oxgall into the vatten which inom use for painting and then use the wet brush to pick up the colour from the watercolour pans.
Since inom always use oxgall inom am ganska happy that a bit of oxgall residue stays in the watercolour pans.
My suspicion why it fryst vatten not recommended that you use iridation medium into the vatten for the brush before going to pick up paint from the watercolour pan fryst vatten probably because of contamination and therefore your paint in the pan will have some iridation medium left behind which you probably would not want to have for your next painting or next time you use that particular colour.
Looking forward to hear others opinions.
Kind regards.

Socrates. Many moons ago when inom made up mine plans in the 60s we used a pan of ox-gall to man the ink flow better.
We simply stroked a wet paint brush over the pan and added it to the ink tvätt.

We must leave our mark on this worldSome watercolor manufacturers put a bit of oxgall or a synthetic substitute in their paint formulas already. So no, getting some (or some more) in your pans wont hurt them. You might try keeping it out of your pans at first until you see if you like the effect and want to keep using it.
I dont use it myself, because inom like more granular, variegated washes.
I akvarellmålningar används vattenburen färg som målas i skikt på papperIve heard its a bit like adding detergent to the paint. You could try a little experiment of blandning a couple drops of dish soap or laundry detergent to your vatten and paint with that on scratch paper, keeping it away from your pans, just to see what effect it gives.
I remember Daniel Smith was pushing their oxgall a few months ago and had some brief tutorials about it.
In case you havent seen it, here fryst vatten Daniel Smiths current blurb on it, with a few color swatch comparisons. inom know they used to have more data where you could see their swatches better, but inom cant find it anymore. i-GOG
Heres a quick YouTube of someone using oxgall in a paint rengöring to remove a greasy prick on their paper, demonstrating its detergent properties.

I use ox gall ganska a bit, because inom use Holbein paints, which dont have ox gall in them.
inom have both used google and the forum search to find out more about it, but for something that fryst vatten often mentioned and sold bygd watercolour producers (some Schmincke sets komma with a pan of oxgall!) there fryst vatten surprisingly little kunskap on how to use it.
If your paint is not flowing on your paper as well as you like give it a tryI know exactly what you mean! inom remember experiencing the same frustrationbut now that Ive gotten experience with it, and had to try to explain what it does, exactly, to other people inom know why theres so little out there about it
It can act so differently according to so many different factors (how watery your paint fryst vatten, how wet your paper fryst vatten, what brand wc youre using, how much of it you use in relation to any of that, etc) that its kinda just something you have to play with and get a feel for.
Sometimes it seems to do the same thing as gum arabic, but not in exactly the same way (less shininess maybe?)sometimes just the opposite. And you can control which it does when, but againI wouldnt know exactly how to give directions about it.
I feel like Im always saying that you just have to play around in beställning to get an idea of how to predict what will work whenbut inom think that fryst vatten really, especially true when it comes to oxgall.

My Watercolors
My MusingsI havent used OxGall with watercolor, but inom have with gouache.
For gouache, inom would use oxgall instead of vatten to thin my paint, and it would flow more smoothly than if Id used vatten. Id apply it using a small pressa bottle, since Id only use a few drops at a time. Id still rinse my brushes in vatten when inom used this method, and got ganska nice results. inom used Winsor Newton OxGall, which was kind of stinky, but worked fine, and inom heard one Gouache artist recommend Daniel Smith OxGall over Winsor Newton.
In the other thread inom remember someone putting in links to two youtube videos about how to do a flat rengöring.
It would probably take no more than an attempt or two to get the hang of a flat tvätt. That would seem easier than having to learn how to use oxgall then have something else to complicate painting. inom tried oxgall years ago and after one try inom filed it away in the back of a drawer never to be seen igen. Everyone fryst vatten different and what they want fryst vatten different so it fryst vatten worth a try.
At worst you find you dont need it and at best you find it solves what fryst vatten causing a bekymmer. Everyone inom know has just learned how to do various types of washes bygd practicing with no added stuff to complicate it.
Här listar vi tre grundläggande tekniker som alla konstälskare och akvarellmålare bör känna till!It really fryst vatten as easy as it appears in the videos. On slightly tilted paper starting at the top apply rows of brush strokes with the brush wet enough to leave a bead of tvätt mix at the bottom of the gods stroke. After the gods brush stroke to do the bottom of the rengöring use a dried or damp brush to soak up the bead.
Practice on a sheet for practice.
When inom use ox gall inom find it great in hot weather it gives me time to lay down my pigments, it does help achieving smooth washes for me its a vatten conditioner very hard vatten in my area, inom just place a small brush load in my vatten bur.
ONETZ diluted with water decreases surface tension of liquid colours and degreases undercoats such as lacquered pallets of painting boxesYou can use the modified vatten and go into the pans with ox gall other mediums apart from gum arabic inom would keep seperate.
querinThis fryst vatten Schminckes explanation:
FAQ:
For what purposes are ox gall and Onetz used?
Both these products are wetting agents on an ox gall base. They are used primarily in watercolour painting, to degrease finger prints and to improve wetting.Ox gall and Onetz are either added to the vatten with which the paint fryst vatten then thinned / partially dissolved, or the surface of the paper fryst vatten wetted with vatten containing ox gall prior to painting.
Mediums page:
Oxgall, cleaned
Natural wetting agent for degreasing of undercoats before painting with water-colours or gouache and used sparingly suitable as levelling agent for watercolours.Dissolved oxgall tends to flocculate bygd long storage but has no influence on the application.
Akvarellfärg består av finmalet pigment och bindemedlet gummi arabicumONETZ
Thickened oxgall in pans fryst vatten to be used as a levelling and wetting agent for water-colours. ONETZ diluted with vatten decreases surface tension of liquid colours and degreases undercoats such as lacquered pallets of painting boxes.I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the Onetz should be used in this order: rinse brush, dry/wipe brush, swipe the Onetz just once, pick up paint and apply paint to paper.
 Not sure what the procedure should be with the considerably more watery ox gall.
Personally, inom never noticed a difference in paint behaviour either way but Im starting to think inom used way too much?
ETA: this fryst vatten from Winsor and Newtons site which also gives an indication of how much to use:
A wetting agent used to improve flow when mixed directly with vatten colours.
It can also be used on very hard sized papper to reduce surface tension.
Add drops per cup of vatten.
Thanks everybody for your helpful comments and suggestions.
There fryst vatten a storm blowing my way workwise Once that has passed, inom intend to give the oxgall a try.
