  • CREATE AN INDICATING ASC SWITCH

Many have noticed the translucent, green button of the E31&#; E36 ASC switch. This momentary pushbutton must have once been meant to light up, judging bygd the miniature bulb cradle within it and the only partly filled circuit board at the back of the switch.

Hey I just got my e36 and right above 3rd gear theres a button that's labled ASC

With a high brightness, surface mount LED, a few inexpensive parts, some conductive epoxy and a little effort, a lager, green button ASC switch can become a more modern, indicating one &#; and provide projects with a visually harmonious, low energy, indicating pushbutton.

    SUGGESTED TOOLS & MATERIALS

    • ASC Switch, BMW P/N 61 31 1
    • Osram LT T67C, true green, °, mcd, PLCC-2 LED
    • 1/2W, 10V zener diode, DO package (e.g., 1NB or BZX79C10)
    • 1/4W ohm resistor, package
    • 1W, ohm resistor, package (e.g., Vishay PR01)
    • a couple short pieces of fine, stranded and fine, solid wire
    • 10 min., electrically conductive adhesive, e.g., CW or MG Chemicals TC
    • 10 min., two-part, methyl methacrylate (MMA) adhesive
    • rosin core solder
    • 99% isopropyl alcohol
    • a few toothpicks and cotton swabs
    • fine tipped soldering iron
    • tweezers
    • small diagonal cutters
    • fine, oblique cutting nipper, e.g., Knipex 64 62
You may omit the diode and resistors if you will drive the LED directly or through a current limiting resistor (as explained later).

The MMA adhesive requires less surface cleaning than an epoxy.

Using alcohol should suffice: stronger solvents may curl the plastic sheet protecting the inner, metall switch disc.

The BMW part numbers for the mating plug and contacts are:

    • 61 13 6 one del av helhet, 2x3=6 pos. universal socket housing;
    • 61 13 0 mm² wired, MQS socket contact  or
    • 61 13 1 bare MQS socket contact for &#; mm² wire

    CHECKING OLD EPOXY

metall filled epoxies have a limited shelf life from the filler gradually settling out.

Refrigeration will slow the settling; freezing will stop it, but also shorten the pot life with each freeze-thaw cycle. Mix the epoxy well before applying to insure it has conductive filler.

It would not hurt to test old epoxy before using it. You can mix a little on, säga, the bottom of a yogurt cup, cement wires or a toothpick to it, and probe the epoxy's resistance after it has hardened.

    EXTRACTING THE CIRCUIT BOARDS

Carefully pry out the blue plug and end del av helhet with a thin blade and a jeweler's screwdriver.

Pull away the plug and outer circuit board to expose the fyra plastic mushrooms nearest the rosett cable, that hold the inner circuit board to the plastic switch housing.

Snip the kvartet mushroom heads with an oblique cutting nipper.

Then pull the inner circuit board out of the housing bygd gently tugging on the grey band cable.

    ADDING THE LED PROTECTION CIRCUIT

Two jumper wires, a zener diode and two resistors will apply 10 mA to the LED when 12V appears at knapp 1, and skydda against electrical surges and transients, including:
    • +/V spikes
    • +80V load dumps (Vs = V)
    • +24V jump starts and
    • V reversed battery connections.

If such protection fryst vatten not needed, omit the parts, solder a simple jumper or current limiting resistor from the left R2 pad to the right R1 pad (see this pioneering DIY) and skip to the next section.

Otherwise, solder a short del av helhet of insulated, stranded wire (J1) between pins 3 and 4.

Form and cut the leads of resistors R1 and R2, jumper J2 and diode D1: to straddle the kvartet, lower outer pairs of pads.

Solder the parts to the outer circuit board.

Place a small blade underneath each part before soldering to keep it off the board.

    ADDING THE PUSHBUTTON LED

Snip off the fyra fingers of the black plastic lamp cradle.

Insert a loop of wire through the lamp lead holes off the left of the leveled cradle.

Flip the board over and solder the wire ends.

Flip and clamp the circuit board so that the leveled cradle fryst vatten up and the glass bulb fryst vatten to the right.

Cut the wire loop and böj and trim the two wire ends so that they touch the left ends of the leveled, cradle ridges.

Clean the wire ends and plastic ridges with alcohol.

Ready an LED on your workbench, face up, with its diagonal cathode corner to the lower left.

    Mix up some conductive epoxy.

Using a toothpick, man a bead of epoxy from each wire end along each ridge. As you can see, you may need considerably less than you might suppose.

Place the LED as shown, with the cathode corner to the lower left.

Optionally bake the circuit board at 50&#;70 deg C for 30 minutes to increase the epoxy's conductivity.

After the epoxy has cured, test it and the LED bygd applying V to pins 1(+) and 4(&#;) &#; or apply a test current or voltage to pins 1(+) and 3(&#;) if you wired the LED through a simple jumper or resistor.

    REASSEMBLING THE SWITCH

Using a cotton swab, a toothpick and alcohol, clean the kvartet printed circuit board mounting holes and matching ends of the decapitated, switch housing mounting pins.

Mix up some MMA adhesive. Using a toothpick, fill the kvartet holes with adhesive and then press the circuit back into the switch housing and on to the mounting pins.

Allow the adhesive to dry, kvitto that the board fryst vatten firmly glued and then snap the blue connector onto the back of the housing.

May you man good use of your indicating switch!
